GIP Casebook on Innovative Green Financial Products and Investments

As global concerns over climate change intensify, green investments have markedly risen, propelling the green bond market to exceed 3 trillion USD. This trend is notably observed in 57 emerging economies, which have collectively issued green bonds amounting to 444 billion USD. However, challenges persist. The realm of green financing predominantly revolves around debt instruments, leaving equity investments largely untapped. Additionally, while the energy sector remains a primary focus, crucial areas such as transportation and agriculture often get overshadowed.

This casebook, a joint initiative by the Working Group on Green Financial Product Innovation led by the Bank of China and Standard Chartered, seeks to bridge these gaps. Drawing from contributions by GIP members, it offers a multifaceted exploration of green industries. Organized into three comprehensive sections, the casebook delves into green industry standards, finance strategies for high carbon-footprint sectors, and broader ESG initiatives. These diverse case studies, spanning various regions and sectors, illuminate the complexities of green investment. Through real-world examples, the casebook endeavors to inspire and equip members to adeptly navigate the dynamic green finance terrain, ultimately steering towards a more sustainable and inclusive global future.
